Sleeping Hermaphroditus, performance, 2023.

Sleeping Hermaphroditus was performed on November 11th, 2023 in intervals of 30 minutes and 60 minutes under the curation of Jeanine Jablonski, commissioned by ILY2 in Portland, Oregon for the gallery's fall group show "I am a city of bones".  In emulating the ancient statue with a nude performance, the humanity of the archetype of this trans deity figure became accessible and normalized to an audience, breaking down the often pornographic stigmas surrounding the trans body and positioning her in the center of the room for complete viewing, something many institutions who possess copies of the statue have often failed to do. To many the original statue is deemed "seductive," possibly because of the nature of her anatomy, however she is simply a woman asleep. Sleeping Hermaphroditus allowed the artist the opportunity to reclaim her spectacle and serve as a cultural mirror for how we view the trans body.
